While looking for a lightweight yet efficient damping material for the bare-metal restoration of a 55 years old Alfa Romeo, I came across Hesovi HeatPro. What intrigued me about them was that they are OEM suppliers to Proton and Perodua and, probably even more so, that their product was claimed to be lightweight yet effective in reducing noise and vibration. For the Alfa, this is my prime consideration as I’m looking for damping like in a modern car while keeping the car as close to one ton as possible. Still a bit skeptical, I decided to give Hesovi HeatPro a try on the doors of my daily runner, a BMW 3-series (F30). The work was done at one of Hesovi’s installation partners. First, the door cards of the car were carefully removed (without breaking any clips!). Then, the rather flimsy factory sound insulation came off, revealing the inside of the door. The installers degreased everything before applying a 9mm thick self-adhesive, cut-to-shape Hesovi HeatPro damping mat to the inside of the door skin. The same process was repeated with a 3mm damping mat that went in place of the factory damping. Amazingly, there was still enough room to even put the factory damping back on top of it before re-attaching the door cards. Even with the door cards off, everything still looks absolutely stock. So how did it turn out? Well, I have to say I’m absolutely amazed. There just is so much less ambient noise coming in through the doors, as well as road noise traveling up through the suspension. As a result, the car feels a lot more solid and “premium”, if that makes sense. What’s more, the doors now close with that very satisfying “thud” that I’ve always associated with old Mercedes-Benz. And those annoying door rattles that are kind of standard on F30s are gone too! All in all, the changes are beyond my expectation, and I can only recommend Hesovi HeatPro to anyone wanting to add some damping to their car. I will for sure be using it more extensively for my Alfa project.
